Vumbaca

The Producer

Vigneti Vumbaca is a compelling, quality-focused winery located in Cirò, the most important and historic viticultural area of Calabria, Italy. The winery’s modern identity is driven by Christian Vumbaca, who famously abandoned a law career in Rome to return to his roots and the family land his mother and uncle first purchased in 1984. Today, Christian organically cultivates six hectares of vineyards, primarily focusing on the ancient, native grapes of the region: Gaglioppo (for red wines) and Greco Bianco (for white wines). His winemaking philosophy is strictly minimalist, centering on organic farming, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and exclusive aging in stainless steel to ensure the purest and most authentic expression of the sandy- and clayey-calcareous terroir and the warm Mediterranean climate.

The estate is a vital part of the "Cirò Revolution," a movement promoting the region's ancient winemaking traditions and moving away from standardized protocols. Vumbaca's commitment to tradition is evident in his use of the traditional "alberello" (bush vine) training system for his over 50-year-old Gaglioppo vines—a method ideally suited to the arid climate. The resulting wines, particularly the Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore DOC and its Riserva counterpart, are celebrated for their sincerity, elegance, and vibrant character, offering a balance of bright fruit, spice, and coastal nuance that embodies the true, ancient heart of Calabrian viticulture.
