Gorghi Tondi

The Producer

Located in the extreme western corner of Sicily, Gorghi Tondi is a distinctive family-run winery defined by its unique location within a protected wildlife sanctuary. The estate sits inside the Lake Preola and Gorghi Tondi Nature Reserve, a WWF-protected oasis in Mazara del Vallo. This setting is crucial to the winery's identity; the vineyards grow alongside small karstic lakes ("gorghi") and Mediterranean scrub, creating a biodiversity-rich environment that heavily influences their organic viticulture.

The winery is currently led by sisters Annamaria and Clara Sala, who represent the fourth generation of a family with deep roots in the region. They have championed a philosophy of sustainability and environmental respect, eschewing synthetic chemicals to protect the delicate ecosystem of the reserve. While they cultivate various native Sicilian varieties like Nero d’Avola, Zibibbo, and Catarratto, their flagship grape is Grillo. They are particularly renowned for showcasing the grape's versatility, producing everything from sparkling and dry whites to "Grillodoro," a rare botrytized (noble rot) dessert wine that is unique to their misty, lake-influenced terroir.
