Gianni Bernazzi
The Producer
Gianni Bernazzi is the current torchbearer of the Azienda Agricola Bellaria estate, a family-run winery nestled in one of the most prestigious and characteristic areas of Montalcino, Tuscany. The estate's history dates back to 1963, when Gianni's grandparents, Assunto Pieri and Bruna Tempori, purchased the land and began farming, producing extra virgin olive oil, and, crucially, making wine. Assunto Pieri was a foundational figure in the region, being one of the 25 original members who signed the founding charter of the Brunello Wine Consortium in 1967. Gianni Bernazzi took over the direction of the property in 2010, blending the cherished, traditional methods passed down from his grandfather with a touch of modern influence to continue crafting acclaimed wines that reflect the unique terroir of their high-altitude vineyards.
The winery's dedication to Sangiovese and its Montalcino roots is evident in its primary production, which focuses on top-tier Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Rosso di Montalcino DOC. Their portfolio includes a premium line of wines named Assunto—a tribute to Gianni's grandfather—which often consists of a single-vineyard Brunello and a Brunello Riserva, acclaimed for its purity, elegance, and potential for long aging. In addition to these signature reds, the estate also produces an IGT Toscana wine called Bruna and a traditional Vin Santo, all while following a philosophy of respecting the vineyard's peculiarities, including no irrigation or synthetic fertilization.
